20/11/2018 Limelight Theatre Company delighted to announce 2019 show

Zelda Rolfe and her Limelight Theatre Company are delighted to announce that they have secured the rights to perform their next show in 2019.

Show is named

Zelda is delighted to announce that her youth theatre company will be performing the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats at the Norwich Maddermarket Theatre, from Wednesday 29th May, through to Saturday 1st June 2019.

CATS is based on ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ by T. S. Eliot. This youth group production is by arrangement with The Musical Company.

Described by one critic as “a magnificent marriage of words, music, dancing, design and direction”, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats is a magical musical sure to mesmerise audiences, both young and old, who enter into the world of this fantastic feline fable.

The story unfolds…

Adapted from TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, this amazing spectacle unfolds in a larger-than-life junkyard playground.  There is a wonderful blend of fantasy, drama and romance, with the setting on the night that the Jellicle Cats meet for the Jellicle Ball in a sparkling fusion of music, dance and verse.

As the Jellicle Cats come out to play on one extraordinary night of the year, they individually recount their stories to entertain Old Deuteronomy, their sage and benevolent chief. Old Deuteronomy must ultimately select one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into an entirely new Jellicle life.

Such memorable songs!

The children from the Limelight Theatre Company will delight you with their songs dedicated to such characters as Rum Tum Tigger, Grizabella, Macavity and Mr Mistoffelees. However, the standout song, which will live in your mind long after the curtain has come down, is, of course, the show-stopping Memory. West End star, Elaine Paige, certainly gave us a memorable performance!

The history of the show

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical and ran for 18 years.

Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

The home of our show

Once again we have managed to secure the half term bank holiday week at the end of May at The Maddermarket Theatre, in the heart of Norwich. Zelda met with Alice Wright, the new General Manager of the Maddermarket, way back in May 2018 to discuss the options for arranging these performances. Find out more about the Maddermarket here.

Auditions for the show

Auditions for the show will commence in January, initially for members of the Limelight Theatre Company. If you wish to become a member then do have a look at our current list of classes. If you are not a member, but wish to be considered for this production then do contact us via our enquiry form. Audition dates will be announced soon, so keep an eye on our website!

I hope you’re well and enjoying the sun! I just wondered if you could let Hayley know how much Grace is loving the drama sessions on Saturday morning. Grace really looks forward to them and it has been a real highlight during our lock-down (we’ve enjoyed listening to her perform!) Hayley is so good with them all and Grace really gets a lot out of it and I just wanted to say thank you for keeping them going. Thank you, Hayley, and all at Limelight!
